SEDGEFIELD NEWS - The family of John Johannes 'Jonkies' Oelf travelled from far and wide to attend his 100th birthday in Karatara on 17 June.
More than 200 family and friends attended the function in the Karatara Community Hall to celebrate Oupa 'The King''s century.
Local councillor Cleone Vanston donated R3 000 from the Ward 2 budget towards his celebration.
Oupa John was born on 11 June 1925 at Highway Portland near Rheenendal. His parents were Johanna Self and Kerneels Prins.
They had eight children, three daughters and five sons. John grew up in Barrington and later met and married Bertha Merton from Belvidere. They have eight children, six daughters - Gwen, Johenna, Vera, Joa, Caroline and Pearl - and two sons - John and David, who has passed away.
Active life
John, who is fondly known as 'Oom Jonkie', which evolved into 'Oupa Jonkie' as he got older, worked in forestry and retired from Farleigh Forest Station at age 60.
The family moved around before settling in Karatara. His wife has passed away, and his daughters have lovingly cared for him.
Oupa Jonkie has led an active life and could often be seen riding around Karatara on his bicycle. He is also fond of gardening.
"We are privileged to have celebrated his 100th birthday," said his great-granddaughter, Lizani Donne Zani Folding.
