PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The NSRI held its 57th Annual Awards Evening and AGM recently at the Capital Zimbali in Ballito, KZN
"The event was a heartfelt celebration of our devoted volunteers and other courageous individuals who selflessly risk their lives to rescue others on South African waters," said an NSRI statement.
"We honoured their unwavering commitment and extraordinary acts of bravery, acknowledging the vital role they play in ensuring the safety and well-being of those in peril at sea."
From 1 January to 31 December 2023, the NSRI conducted 1 126 rescue operations, rescuing 1 822 people and 97 animals.
In total, 58 awards were presented during the ceremony, including 45 for rescues during the 2022 KZN floods.
Seventeen Bronze and Silver Gallantry awards honouring the contributions of volunteers in rescues were presented, and for the first time in the NSRI's history, five Gold Gallantry awards were awarded to volunteers. Four Bravery awards were also presented at the ceremony to members of the public who were not affiliated with the NSRI. Knysna Station 12 and Plett Station 14 also featured.
