KNYSNA NEWS - In a display of community support, the Knysna municipality, under the leadership of executive mayor Aubrey Tsengwa, recently awarded R289 000 in grants-in-aid to 45 local charitable organisations.
The handover ceremony, held at the council chambers, reaffirmed the municipality's ongoing commitment to uplifting the community and fostering positive social change.
The event was attended by a host of municipal leaders, including municipal manager Lulamile Mapholoba, deputy mayor Alberto Riccardo Marbi, and councillors Mark Willemse and Elmarie Maxim - who served as the MC.
Impact of NGOs
Throughout the ceremony, speakers emphasised the immeasurable impact that local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and sports clubs have on Knysna's communities.
These groups, often operating with limited resources, work tirelessly to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals and families, offering much-needed support, opportunities for growth, and a sense of hope.
In his address, Tsengwa commended the selfless dedication of the organisations, acknowledging the profound difference they make despite operating with few resources.
"Your commitment to our community, driven purely by the desire to make a difference, represents the very essence of humanity at its finest. You exemplify the spirit of ubuntu - our interconnectedness and shared purpose: 'I am, because we are,'" he said.
The grants, which will benefit a diverse range of local groups, from youth development programmes to sports clubs and community outreach initiatives, are a part of the municipality's ongoing effort to build a more inclusive, resilient, and thriving community.
'Sustainable development'
Tsengwa emphasised that by investing in the efforts of NGOs and sports clubs, the municipality seeks to build a future rooted in shared values of generosity, empathy, and solidarity.
"This collaboration not only addresses immediate needs, but also lays the foundation for sustainable and meaningful community development."
