KNYSNA NEWS - A 36-year-old man appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's Court today, 30 April, in connection with the murder of his girlfriend. He was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after the victim's body was found dumped in a pit toilet in Nekkies.
Residents of the area were present at the court to support the family of the deceased.
Missing
It is alleged that the couple were staying together and the sister of the deceased was visiting over the weekend. A community member, Nobom Mfene, said the deceased didn't came back home from work on Saturday.
"The suspect was questioned by the sister of the deceased," said Mfene. "He said she was still at work even though it was now evening. This sister noted that the suspect was showing signs of discomfort and was going out to the toilet every now and then. She alerted family members that her sister had not returned home and it was getting late in the night."
Body found
The police were notified of her absence in the early hours of Sunday morning. They came to the home, where they conducted a search and found the body in the pit toilet. Residents said it appeared that she had been strangled.
None of the victim's belongings were missing. However, the boyfriend had allegedly been using the cellphone and bank cards of the deceased throughout Saturday and he was arrested.
Western Cape police media liaison officer Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a murder case has been opened by Knysna police following the death of a 36-year-old female on Sunday 27April in the Nekkies informal settlement.
"According to reports, police members were called to the crime scene where they found the victim in an outside toilet," Twigg said.
"The circumstances surrounding her death are under investigation. We can confirm that a 36-year-old male was arrested in connection with the murder."
The case was postponed to 9 May for a formal bail application.
