KNYSNA NEWS - John Hanbiyani, a local draughts player, made an exceptional impression at the provincial play-offs in Johannesburg two weeks ago, where he secured his place among the top seven players in the country.
This incredible achievement has earned him the opportunity to represent South Africa at the World Draughts Championships, to take place in Texas next year.
Draughts, a two-player strategy game, requires players to move pieces diagonally across a board and capture opponents' pieces by jumping over them.
'Natural feeling for game'
Reflecting on his journey, Hanbiyani shared his long-standing passion for the game.
"Yes, I've played other sports as well, like soccer and even a little chess at some point, but I quickly realised that it's not easy to beat me at draughts.
"I guess I have a natural feeling for the game. That being said, being a member of the draughts club in Knysna has helped my game a great deal over the years.
'Ready for challenge'
"I've learned a lot from the provincial play-offs, and I'm using that experience to prepare for the world stage.
"It's going to be tough, but I'm ready for the challenge," he said.
Despite his past success in various tournaments, Hanbiyani believes making the cut for the world champs is his highest achievement.
'Competition was tough'
"This is something I have worked towards, so to finally reach my goal, it's something I'm very proud of, along with my family, who have supported me throughout.
"Over in Johannesburg, the competition was really tough, with many seasoned players vying for a spot.
"I'm just glad I held my nerve until the end to see it through," he said.
With the world champs just months away, he faces financial hurdles as he is currently raising funds for his visa and accommodation.
