PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Lifeguards and a medical student rescued an elderly man finding himself in difficulty in the surf on Saturday 6 February.
Plettenberg Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) acting station commander, Ross Badenhorst, said they activated their crew just after 18:00 following reports of a "non-fatal drowning" at Robberg 5 beach in the coastal holiday town.
When volunteers arrived on the scene, the 74-year-old had already been rescued from the surf and brought to the beach by lifeguards on duty.
"The man was treated on the beach for non-fatal drowning symptoms before being transported to hospital by Medlife ambulance in a stable condition," Baden-horst said.
Badenhorst commended not only the lifeguards who acted fast, but also a final year medical student who assisted the man with medical care on the beach.
