PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou Mayor Dave Swart has used funds from the Bitou Mayoral Fund to build an access ramp for wheelchair-bound Percy van Rooyen of Ebenezer.
Swart said the project was launched following a request from the Elderly and Disability Forum, with which the mayor’s office has a close working relationship.
"Being able to assist with these requests often needs the support of the community members and businesses in Bitou," he said.
"I want to thank the partners, Sean de Klerk and Renov8-Unlimited team from the community, Jack's Paint and Family Home Handyman Services' Craig Christie for the materials that were needed and work done.
"This project . . . has once again highlighted the importance of promoting awareness and understanding of the challenges that face our differently abled," said Swart. He said there is a need in many communities for disabled-friendly design of public spaces.
"We need to remember that at any time, any able-bodied person can become disabled, even temporarily like breaking an arm or leg, and may need such access. Even simple things such as railings on stairs in public areas will assist differently-abled people," said Swart.
"We hope to see more projects like this in Bitou in the future and we encourage everyone to contribute to a more inclusive and safe society for persons who are differently abled."
