KNYSNA NEWS - Most Greater Knysna libraries reopened to the public this week, with the bulk reopening on Monday 15 February, while Sedgefield reopened on Wednesday and Fairview is set to reopen on Monday 22 February.
The facilities have been closed since December 2020 when local Covid-19 infections soared and the Garden Route was declared a hotspot.
"We are glad that these facilities may now reopen, following the announcement that Level 3 restrictions had been amended," said Knysna Acting Municipal Manager Dawid Adonis, who feels that libraries offer a valuable service to communities.
"The safety of staff and patrons remains of utmost importance, and all relevant Covid-19 prevention protocols are in place at all libraries. Our kerbside collection and drop-off service will also remain."
According to a municipal press release, access to the libraries will be restricted based on the number of people allowed entry relevant to the size of the facility, while the wearing of masks, sanitising of hands, and temperature screening will all be compulsory. Material returned to the libraries will be quarantined for 72 hours before being handled by library staff, entered into the system, or made available for loan.
"Our libraries attract and serve users from all walks of life," said Adonis. "Parents choose their children's first picture books; bookworms seek escape and students and international researchers make use of special collections. We look forward to welcoming them back."
Residents also have the option to browse the online library catalogue and submit requests for specific books, or general material, via e-mail or telephone.
All libraries, except Fairview, are open Mondays to Fridays from 10:00 to 16:00. The hours for Fairview are from 12:00 to 16:00.
