KNYSNA NEWS - The Leisure Island Bridge Club marked a major milestone on 4 September, celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special card game and gathering at the Leisure Isle Bowling Club.
Members came together for a memorable day of friendly competition, delicious treats, and a celebration of the club's journey.
Founder Pam Koen delivered a moving speech, reflecting on the club's humble beginnings and the enduring friendships that have flourished around the bridge table over the past quarter century.
Laughter, shared stories, and friendship filled the room, highlighting the strong sense of community that has defined the club since its inception.
Organisers described the anniversary not only as a reflection of the past but also a celebration of the future. Treasurer and scorer Lindsay Durham expressed pride in the club's achievements, particularly in remaining relevant through changing times and challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We're always looking for new members," said Durham. "Come with a partner and you're guaranteed a game. It costs just R20 to play, and that includes tea or coffee and two delicious cream biscuits. Turning 25 is really something to brag about, and all new players are welcome!"
The club boasts around 250 past and present members and maintains a strong weekly turnout. It is affiliated with the English Bridge Union (EBU), and scoring is done to EBU standards. As a duplicate bridge club, it meets every Thursday at the Leisure Island Country Club.
As the cards were dealt and the games began, the day stood as a celebration of bridge, friendships and community built over 25 years - with many more still to come.
