Update
KNYSNA NEWS - The Akkerkloof Dam, one of two dams that supply Knysna with water, is running dry.
A photograph of the dam taken today, Monday 17 June, shows it to be "probably at the lowest (level) it's ever been", Sharon Sabbagh, shadow MMC for finance, and councillor for Ward 9, Knysna, said.
The off-river holding dam, Akkerkloof Dam, can hold 860MI of water at full capacity, and Knysna's other supply dam, the off-river holding Glebe Dam, 150MI.
On Thursday, 6 June, the Knysna-Plett Herald reported that a reservoir in Ward 10, Knysna, had been overflowing strongly for more than two months, without successful intervention by the municipality - and today the overflow there continued.
The wasted water from the reservoir, at Eastford Country Estate, has created a fast-running rivulet, which flows down a slope.
Sabbagh said today there was still "water running down the mountain". "I'm gobsmacked. It's treated water. Nobody has done anything about it. There's no sense of urgency," she said.
"We are in a water crisis - we've got the Knysna Oyster Festival coming up, which will increase the demand for water."
Compounding the problem is water flowing equally strongly alongside a home in Milkwood Drive, Ward 10, Knysna.
On Friday, 14 June, the councillor for the ward, Peter Bester, said the water, likely coming from an overflowing reservoir, was flowing so strongly the home "was in danger of having its foundations compromised".
Today, the strong flow there continued, too.
In addition to this huge waste of water, Sabbagh said today that water was leaking at two sites in Knysna - in Nekkies and in Bongani.
Comment from the municipality, when obtained, will be published.
Water restrictions are in force in Knysna.
