KNYSNA - A pink ribbon, a vivid symbol of the event's cause - the fight against cancer - adorned the 5km route walked and run by over 400 participants at the annual 5km Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) event on Saturday 5 July.
As part of the Knysna Oyster Festival, the event kicked off at 09:00 from the bustling Oyster Festival Hub on Waterfront Drive.
Participants of all ages moved through a scenic five-kilometre route that looped past Long Street and along the tranquil coastal promenade toward Costa Sarda.
Organised by the local event group Ondruma in collaboration with Cansa, the event aimed to raise funds for cancer research, education, and support services throughout the country. All proceeds from registrations and merchandise sales will go directly to Cansa.
Volunteers from the Knysna Honorary Rangers, supported by local traffic officers, marshalled the route and helped ensure a safe experience for all.
Among the crowd were cancer survivors, patients, and their families, adding emotional significance to the event. Many participants wore pink in tribute, with some carrying banners or photos of loved ones affected by cancer.
"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us," said event organisers. "Every step taken today represents hope, healing, and a commitment to fighting cancer together."
At the finish line, participants were greeted with water donated by Cancercare South Africa and SaltWTR electrolyte sachets to aid in recovery. Special thanks go to Western Cape Government and Eden Sport Council, Mickey Louw, SaltWTR, Cansa Volunteers and Knysna Honorary Rangers.
