KNYSNA NEWS - Three suspects arrested at the entrance to Knysna on the N2 highway, may be linked to serious crimes in the area.
On Thursday 3 October at about 18:00, the Knysna Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) in conjunction with Western Cape Provincial Traffic officials, conducted a vehicle check point and pulled over a silver Volkswagen Polo with three occupants.
When the members approached the vehicle, one of the occupants got out and fled. The members gave chase and the fleeing suspect's freedom was short-lived when the team caught up with him.
While searching the the vehicle and the occupants, an unlicensed firearm and twenty-three 9mm rounds of ammunition were found. All three occupants were taken into custody for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The trio remain in police custody and are expected to make their first appearance in the Knysna Magistrates’ court on Monday 7 October.
The police are investigating the possibility that the suspects could be linked to other serious crimes in the region.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Christopher Spies, says these arrests form part of ongoing operations to safeguard the public as well as road users. "Similar operations will be conducted over the coming weekend as part of the crime combatting operation, Operation Shanela."
