KNYSNA NEWS - In the spirit of honouring International Nurses' Day the Western Cape government health department in the Garden Route and central Karoo districts thanked every single one of their nurses for their special commitment to the health care.
The day is annually celebrated on 12 May.
The department spoke to some of these familiar faces at the Knysna Provincial Hospital.
Denise Rubalin, an operational manager at the hospital's theatre. She has been living her childhood dream for the past 37 years. She works in the community as a church leader and says this enhances her nursing career to serve people to the fullest, "I was born to care."
Elda Oelf, a professional nurse at the hospital's men's ward. She has been a nurse for 33 years. She knew she wanted to serve people either by becoming a nurse or social worker. She enjoys her works and listening to patients. In her free time she reads, spends time with her two grandchildren and is also very involved in her church.
Talicia Coetzer, a professional nurse at the hospital. She knew from the age of 12 that she wantedto be a nurse during her father's stay in ICU, a nurse took time to explain her father's injuries and also what to expect when she saw him. She says she strives to have the same positive impact on her patients doing what she loves most.
Lilian Ruiters, a staff nurse at the emergency centre of the hospital who chose the profession because it is challenging and interesting. She enjoys making a difference and dealing with many aspects of patient care, and has been for the past 29 years. She says nursing for her is a meaningful career filled with many opportunities and rewards.
Alida Danhausen, a staff nurse at the hospitals maternity ward. She loves working with premature babies and neonates and being a part of their long journey in hospital fills her heart with joy. The highlight of her year is when they come to visit on Preemie Day. She says she was born to be a nurse and has been one for 29 years.
