Von Meck's publisher, Tafelberg Publishers of Cape Town, generously made the donation when they heard that many local Grade 11 learners, who study the book as a prescribed reader, did not have their own copies to use for exams.
Knysna head librarian, Deanne van Heerden and staff of the Knysna Library gratefully accepted the donation.
Vaselinetjie is the compelling story of a racially mixed group of South African children surviving in a children's home in the nineties. Critics called it a warm tribute to the resilience of the human spirit, the power of love and people's ability to triumph despite all that conspires against them.
The book was first published in 2004 and received the Jan Rabie/Rapport Prize, the M.E.R. Prize for Youth Literature and an M-Net prize in 2005. It was also one of only two books from South Africa to form part of an international touring exhibition of the best youth books in the world. More than 70 000 copies of the Afrikaans novel were sold. It has also been translated into English.
