KNYSNA NEWS - One of Knysna's oldest institutions, Unity Lodge No 2181, celebrated 140 years of continuous meetings on 14 April - exactly 140 years after its founding in 1886 under the United Grand Lodge of England.
Established by prominent local families including the Duthies, Rexes and Newdigates, the lodge has played a quiet but enduring role in the town's development. A special commemorative meeting was held to honour past members, attended by visitors from lodges across the Garden Route.
Worshipful Master Michael Calvert-Smith noted that many residents are unaware of the lodge's long presence. "Historically, Freemasonry was quite secretive, but today we are far more open and welcome members of the public to learn about what we do," he said.
The Freemasons is a system of moral and ethical symbols and allegories, based on the Stonemasons' lodges and trades. The pathway that Freemasonry provides can enable a brother to improve himself spiritually, thus becoming a better, more upstanding person and a worthy part of the wider community.
Freemasonry in South Africa dates back to 1772 and centres on moral development, self-improvement and community service. Locally, Unity Lodge supports organisations such as Kaws and the Knysna Sea Cadets through charitable initiatives.
Unity Hall, located in Unity Street, is among Knysna's oldest buildings, originally used by the Good Templars. It also served as a municipal meeting venue before the Town Hall was built.
