GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - An accident involving four vehicles on the N2 just outside Sedgefield near the Groenvlei turnoff on Sunday 31 March claimed the life of a 25-year-old driver who was trapped in his Polo after the accident.
The driver, who was seriously injured and rushed to hospital, succumbed to his injuries on Monday 1 April, according to Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa. "Another vehicle that caused the crash got away," he added.
According to Cape Talk, Africa said two cars involved in a race ("dicing") on the road caused the accident and he appealed to people who saw this to come forth with particulars of those vehicles.
He said, "When people are endangering other people's lives, take down the registration number and forward it to 021 946 1646."
Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcom Pojie said a reckless and negligence driving case has been opened.
Pojie said he is yet to confirm the death of the Polo driver and if that is the case, a charge of murder will be added. "No arrests have been made yet."
A cyclist was killed when he was hit by a taxi on George Rex Drive on Wednesday 27 March. Americo Frasco (75) from Costa Sarda died on the scene. Knysna police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said the cyclist was crossing the road when he was hit by the taxi, and that a culpable homicide case has been opened. The vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident that led to the death of a Plettenberg Bay man has been found.
The accident that claimed the life of 29-year-old Alan Smit occurred on the N2 between Sedgefield and Knysna on 23 March.
Smit's friend who witnessed the incident could only identify the perpetrator's vehicle as a silver Opel Corsa bakkie.
