KNYSNA NEWS - The Southern Cape Bridge Union (SCBU) held its AGM at the Knysna Angling Club recently.
The SCBU is the administrative body of competitive bridge in our area, which encompasses Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, George, Knysna and Pettenberg Bay.
It is affiliated directly to the SA Bridge Federation which, in turn, administers bridge in South Africa, organises national championships and selects teams to participate in the World Bridge Federation such as the famous Bermuda Bowl held every four years in various parts of the globe.
The reports by the president and treasurer were read and accepted by the meeting.
Heidi Atkinson congratulated Knysna for winning both A and B leagues for 2017.
These are team competitions in the form of a round robin between three towns once a month.
The league has run for many years.
It was noted that the number of participants in our other regional events had sadly decreased over the years.
The reasons seem to be the rising cost of petrol, inflation, geographical distances and the ageing membership.
The SCBU committee undertook to motivate their players to take full advantage of the competitions held in our area.
The delegates of the five registered bridge clubs unanimously selected the following executive:
- President: Heidi Atkinson of Knysna Duplicate Bridge Club
- Vice president: Karin van der Merwe George Bridge Club
- Secretary: Mary Walter of Plettenberg Bridge Club
- Treasurer: Gail Bezuidenhout of Knysna Duplicate Bridge Club
