KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Alcohol and Drug Centre (KADC) hosted a demonstration at Knysna Memorial Square on Monday 26 June to raise awareness for International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. KADC is a community-based organisation situated in Knysna that renders its services in the Knysna and Bitou area.
Members of the community arrived with banners to show their support. This year's theme was PEOPLE: Protect All People, Educate yourself and others, Offer alternatives, Prioritise prevention, Lead with compassion and End stigma.
World Drug Day aims to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.
The aim of this year's campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy; providing evidence-based, voluntary services for all; offering alternatives to punishment; prioritising prevention; and leading with compassion.
The campaign also aims to combat stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental.

The demonstration was followed by a programme held at Loerie Park where KADC assisted in providing free drug screening. A soup kitchen was also held for the benefit of the homeless in the area.
"Today we commemorate and raise awareness about substance abuse and drug trafficking on a national scale.
"We hope that this demonstration will make a difference," said Marshal Lamini, CEO of KADC.
