PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Local artist Sarah Waite has been selected to show one of her pastel artworks, Cape Fox, at the Fine Arts Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition in Namibia in April.
Sarah's pastel artwork is one of 35 finalists chosen out of 173 entries, and will be judged in Swakopmund on 4 April as part of an important celebration of wildlife, art and conservation.
A letter from the organisers said Sarah's achievement was "remarkable".
"It is testament to the strength, quality, and impact of your artistic voice. We are truly delighted to present your original artwork in this prestigious exhibition," said the accolade.
"I was shocked when I heard that my work had been selected. I am truly honoured," said Sarah, who entered the competition for the first time.
Mysticism of art
Sarah's artworks are on display at a noteworthy art exhibition held at the Quartet Retirement Estate, on the N2 (Opposite BUCO), along with those of 20 Plett artists, including residents of the estate. The exhibit runs from 14 to 22 March.
The exhibition was opened by renowned artist Thomas Jung who spoke about the history, science and mysticism of art.
The Africa Wildlife Artist of the Year competition in Namibia supports two initiatives dedicated to the research and protection of the brown hyena in Namibia: the Brown Hyena Research Project and the Skeleton Coast Brown Hyena Project. There are fewer than 800 of these hyenas remaining in Namibia.
