KNYSNA NUUS – Investigations are firmly underway in Knysna after a member of the public made a truly gruesome discovery last weekend when he stumbled upon a bag of human body parts.
Rumours of the find began doing the rounds in Knysna on Saturday, with many unfounded claims floating around social circles in town. While the rumours were largely baseless, they all had one recurring theme – human remains were found in Knysna on Saturday.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies did not entertain the rumours, but did confirm that human remains had been found by a member of the public.
"Police [have] opened an inquest docket after human remains was found at St George's Street near the Main Street of Knysna on Saturday 22 April at about 06:00," Spies confirmed.
St George's Street is the one-way access road that connects the N2/Main Road and Rawson Street, running past the Knysna taxi rank.
According to Spies, early investigations into the find have revealed that a member of the public alerted Knysna police about his find, having discovered a body part in a medical waste removal bag.
"Upon further investigation it was established that a medical waste removal truck was parked in the central business district the previous night and some items were removed from the truck by a group. They left the items which include medical waste next to the road," Spies said.
"The vehicle left the town during the earlier hours on Saturday and is yet to be traced. The origin of the find still needs to be established and forms part of the ongoing police probe."
