PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Police are looking for an occupant of a vehicle involved in a horrific crash on the N2 in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday 13 March which claimed the lives of two and left three others seriously injured.
The man disappeared from the scene after the incident.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said the incident occurred at about 21:00 near Ebenezer on the outskirts of Plett. He said a preliminary investigation revealed that an Opel Corsa bakkie, with two occupants, had been travelling on the N2 from Kwanokuthula towards Plettenberg Bay when the driver overtook several vehicles, allegedly at high speed.
It is believed that the vehicle's headlights were either switched off or out of order.
"Consequently the driver lost control and collided head-on with a Toyota Avanza travelling in the opposite direction in the oncoming lane," Pojie said.
There were four people in the Avanaza.
"During the impact of the collision the Avanza caught fire and a witness to the incident, another motorist, aided the three passengers of the Avanza to safety." The driver of the Avanza, Plett local Desmond Jack, succumbed on impact.
Pojie said it was further alleged that one of the occupants of the Corsa was later found under the vehicle. He too died on the scene.
"The three injured passengers of the Avanza were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment."
Pojie appealed to anyone with information about the whereabouts of the second occupant of the Corsa, who disappeared from the scene, to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Thomas James, on 044 501 1941 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
Plettenberg Bay police station commander Colonel Michael Taylor expressed his gratitude towards the vigilance and prompt action taken by the witness who had put his own life at risk to save those who faced death in the face of a raging fire.
Pojie confirmed that the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
