KNYSNA NEWS - This year marks the 60th anniversary of the volunteer organisation the SANParks Honorary Rangers (SHR), and rangers from across the country will gather in Wilderness and Knysna to celebrate this significant milestone at their annual indaba this month.
The SHR are dedicated to nature conservation in South Africa, and provide South Africans who are passionate about nature the chance to protect and preserve our unique natural heritage for future generations.
The organising committee has curated an impressive programme featuring courses, activities and entertainment to honour this special occasion, on the Garden Route from Monday to Saturday, 9 to 14 September.
Indaba participants can look forward to a golfing competition, a photographic competition, various forest walks and hikes, workshops, presentations and birding experiences unique to the Garden Route.
R100m contribution
Over the past six decades, the SHR have grown tremendously in numbers and impact. In the past 10 years alone, their gross income increased by 60%, enabling a 163% rise in direct contributions to SANParks, while indirect contributions grew by 93%.
In 2024, they surpassed the incredible milestone of contributing over R100 million to SANParks.
These achievements speak to the dedication of passionate volunteers, alongside the invaluable support of donors, sponsors and contributors.
Making a difference
With more than 2 100 volunteers based in 31 regions across the country and active in all 21 national parks, these rangers are involved in diverse roles - from assisting at entry gates and fundraising for anti-poaching activities to managing visitors, running youth programmes, and providing specialist advice on infrastructure and scientific projects.
Becoming a SANParks Honorary Ranger requires a strong commitment to conservation, and candidates undergo a rigorous selection process, ensuring that each member is dedicated to making a real difference.
