KNYSNA NEWS - The term "Please take a seat" was taken to a whole new level when it came to light that waiting room chairs were actually being stolen by individuals casually strolling into the premises, picking up chairs and leaving at a business in Queen Street.
The receptionist at the business, who asked not to be named nor to have the business identified, said the chair thieves struck at least three times on three consecutive days, and took three chairs and a coffee table. The incident occurred during the week of 7 January.
"It was business here as usual and the door was left open as it was really hot outside. We had some people walk in and although staff were in their offices, two chairs were stolen without anyone immediately noticing. They were white, wooden chairs.
The next day a man came inside and walked around. When I asked if I could help him he said he was looking for a job. I said there was no job and he walked out. A few minutes later we realised another chair had been stolen.
He was standing at an angle so I couldn't see if he was carrying a chair."
The receptionist stated that on the following day another man walked in and grabbed a chair before making his way out of the building.
"One of the staff members made a scene and managed to get the man to drop the chair. He then made a run for it."
As to the coffee table, she said they never noticed on which of the days it was taken.
She said the incident has since left them with a "bitter taste in the mouth", and that more security measures are being implemented.
She also advised other businesses to be aware of their surroundings and more cautious when it comes to suspiciously acting individuals.
"We are in the process of opening a case with the police," she concluded.
