KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Municipality has confirmed that the discharge of waste liquid from a sewer suction truck, captured on video in the Nekkies area earlier this week, was unauthorised and is now the subject of an internal investigation.
The municipality issued the confirmation following reports that footage recorded by a concerned resident on 1 June appeared to show the illegal dumping of effluent by a honey sucker vehicle in the Dam se Bos/Nekkies area.
In a statement, the municipality said it became aware of the incident after it was reported by a member of the public and immediately took steps to verify what had occurred.
“The municipality can confirm that the discharge was not authorised, and internal processes have since been initiated,” the statement read.
According to Knysna Municipality communications officer Nwabisa Pondoyi, the matter is being dealt with in accordance with the municipality’s disciplinary code and applicable internal procedures.
No further details regarding those involved have been released while the investigation remains ongoing.
The municipality said that it will assess any potential environmental impact arising from the incident and consider measures to strengthen oversight mechanisms aimed at preventing similar occurrences in future.
Meanwhile, the outcome of the investigation by the Green Scorpions is being awaited after the Western Cape Department of Local Government referred the video footage to the environmental enforcement authorities for further investigation.
