KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Waterfront and surrounding venues will come alive on Youth Day, 16 June, when 200 young environmental ambassadors gather for the ‘Our Ocean Heritage’ festival, a free community event focused on conservation education and awareness.
Organisers say the event comes at a time of growing environmental concern, with natural disasters, climate pressures and damage to fragile ecosystems underlining the urgent need for stronger community action to protect land, air and oceans.
The programme will include a theatre performance on local whales by Lunchbox Theatre, as well as talks by experts covering fynbos, fish, water systems, birds, cetaceans and elephants.
The aim is to combine science-based learning with accessible, engaging experiences for young people and families.
The event is open to the public, with families encouraged to attend, bring picnic blankets and enjoy a day of environmental learning and activities. A potjie lunch will be available, along with coffee, tea, hot chocolate and other refreshments for sale.
The festival also showcases the work of the Project UbuMama Outdoor Classroom, based in Khayalethu, Knysna, which has been operating since 2020.
The project focuses on reconnecting children with nature and heritage through storytelling, music, dance, crafts and traditional food preparation. It aims to strengthen cultural identity, pride and environmental awareness among learners.
In partnership with SANParks, UbuMama gives disadvantaged learners access to outdoor education through guided excursions into natural environments. Sponsorships help cover transport costs, while SANParks provides access and expert guidance.
Organisers say initiatives such as UbuMama and the Youth Day festival play an important role in developing environmentally conscious young people who understand the connection between communities and the natural world.
Project UbuMama is independently sponsored, and those wishing to support the initiative can find more information at www.ubumama.co.za
