KNYSNA NEWS - On Saturday 9 March, Rotary hosted its annual Shavathon event at the Knysna Mall.
The Rotary Shavathon has become a much-anticipated event in the local community and the mall was a hub of support as people gathered to either shave their heads or opt for a fun and colourful temporary hair dye in support of those affected by cancer.
Despite hard times that have fallen upon everyone, the community still showed their support for this event.
One of the highlights of the Shavathon was the act of participants voluntarily shaving their heads to show empathy, support, and a willingness to stand alongside those battling cancer.
By shedding their hair, participants demonstrated that physical appearance is secondary to the emotional and psychological support cancer patients need during their treatment.
Understanding that not everyone may be ready to part with their locks, a creative alternative was on offer – temporary hair dye. Participants could choose from a vibrant palette of colours to show support in a unique and visually captivating way.

The Rotary Shavathon is a powerful platform to engage the community in the fight against cancer. Beyond the visible impact of shaved heads and colourful hair, the event fosters conversations about cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of supporting those undergoing treatment. It encourages individuals to overcome the stigma surrounding cancer and embrace a compassionate, empathetic approach.
While the event is primarily about raising awareness, it also serves as a fundraising initiative for cancer patients.
Participants are encouraged to gather donations from friends, family and community members, with all proceeds going towards supporting cancer patients' medical expenses, counselling services, and research efforts.
"We had support from so many people in the community that we really appreciate," says Irmela Pakendorf of Rotary. "We had support from some cancer survivors as well, a number of people who also had been in remission showed up to support the cause. It is heart-warming to know that through these harsh times there are still many beautiful stories of surviving and beating cancer."
Rotary wishes to thank the Knysna Mall for the use of the space, and the generous donors of Knysna who showed their immense support of the cause.
