GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Mossel Bay Race (MBR), South Africa's oldest ocean race, started in Simon's Town and was expected to end in Mossel Bay on Sunday 2 October.
The race first took place in 1955 and runs from Simon's Town to Mossel Bay every year. It is renowned for being a gruelling race and from this year it also serves as a Cape to Rio qualifier.
According to Paul Dennet of False Bay Yacht Club, which organises the MBR, it will again be a rough ride with challenging conditions forecast.
"The race covers 200 nautical miles, which takes an average of two days to complete, and cut-off for the last finishers is Sunday October 2," he says.
"The intention is to allow boats to be delivered back to their home port over the weekend. Therefore, our official prize-giving is planned for the following Friday evening at FBYC."
