GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Staff in the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) has planned multiple activities in and around Wilderness to commemorate Mandela Day.
People & Conservation Officer (P&C) for Wilderness, Phumla Nyathikazi says the Goudveld team will be heading to Rheenendal Primary school to work on the school’s food garden which is part of the school’s feeding scheme.
The teams will also be packing 1000 nutrition packs to be distributed to the most impoverished areas in George.
Those stationed in Beervlei will revive the area by painting and cleaning the Sonnerbloem Creche.
Staff in the main Ebb & Flow Rest Camp including the Park’s technical team, marine and lakes rangers will head to Carpdiem, an organisation for people who are physically challenged. ‘There they will paint the play area, fill sand pit play areas and work in the garden to beautify the area. Staff in Farleigh will head to the Redland Primary to paint the school.’
According to the Government Communications and Information System (GCIS), this year’s approach is to focus on five (5) areas with the most impact including education and literacy, food and nutrition, shelter, sanitation and active citizenship.
Nobulumko Gantsho, People & Conservation Officer for Tsitsikamma says the Park’s focus will be to refurbish two creches, one in Mandela Park and another in Storms River (Tsitsikamma). ‘In addition, we will also work with the Koukamma Municipality to make a playground for local kids by clearing and cleaning the area.’
People & Conservation Officer for Knysna, Ndumi Mgwenya says the Park has evolved with the campaign to focus on projects that will have the most long-lived impact on communities. ‘This year the Knysna teams will paint a crèche and plant trees in two creches, one in Bongani and the other in Diepwalle.’
Knysna rangers will also be joining Scientific Services at the Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS). Other joint events with stakeholders include a career expo with Kilt (Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching).
