KNYSNA NEWS - The discovery of three hand grenades in a box delivered to a business in Main Road, Knysna, led to a section of the road being closed to traffic for about one-and-a-half hours.
Main Road was closed at the intersection with Queen Street and at a point eastward of the Police Station from around 09:30 to 11:00 on Friday 17 January, forcing east-bound and west-bound traffic to use alternate routes to exit and enter the town.
A person at the business, a charity shop, apparently found the grenades when opening the box, and notified the police of them.
'Didn’t pose threat'
According to Sergeant Chris Spies, police spokesman for the Southern Cape, the police's bomb squad was immediately called to the scene.
The bomb squad removed the parcel from the business and "the items, three used hand grenades, didn’t pose any threat, but were subsequently disposed of by the members".
A contingent of Knysna police officers surrounded the entrance to the business as the bomb squad examined the grenades and then took them away.
At the time, an officer at the scene told the Knysna-Plett Herald that the road had been closed while an investigation into an unspecified matter was undertaken.
