PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Formosa Primary School was bursting at the seams over the past week as they celebrated the major milestone of turning half a century old.
The school, in New Horizons in Plettenberg Bay, took out all stops in celebrating its 50th anniversary.
What makes the occasion even more special is that, in 1969, Formosa Primary became the first school established in New Horizons on the outskirts of town and remains the only primary school in the area today.

Festivities kicked off last week Thursday with an opening service in the school followed by cake and party packs for all the learners. The celebrations did not end there and during the course of the evening children, parents, teachers, alumni, former teachers and members of the community came together at the school for a bring-and-braai event.
Fajousto Groenewald of Formosa Primary said the highlight of the festivities was the weekend's sports day. "Eight schools participated, some even as far as Mossel Bay and the Central Karoo, came to compete in a variety of sports disciplines," Groenewald said.
He added that Kranshoek Primary School took top honours, followed by Formosa in close second and Garden Route Primary in Mossel Bay taking the final spot on the podium.
Another colourful event included a street parade with all the bells and whistles and an appearance by Miss Formosa Primary.
Music lovers were also in for a treat with a performance by Mossel Bay jazz band G-minor. "The show was well supported."
The festivities came to an end on Sunday with a thanksgiving service.
"This is an important milestone for us. We have always been a beacon of hope for the future. Hope turns into a something tangible with a solid foundation and that is what we are trying to achieve at Formosa Primary. We hope we can continue to be a beacon of hope for the next 50 years and mold great youngsters for the future of the area and our country."
Groenewald said they have since the celebrations received many compliments on the success of the week's events.
