KNYSNA NEWS - Unverified information at this stage indicates that between 14 and 20 structures have been destroyed in the wildfire that raged through Bongani, Concordia and Khayalethu yesterday.
It is alleged that the fire stemmed from a controlled fire in the valley north of Khayalethu a few days ago, that was spread by wind.
According to an official media release by Knysna Municipality, the Knysna Fire Department responded to a veldfire reported in the Bongani area at around 11:09 yesterday, with crews from the Jood-se-Kamp Satellite Fire Station arriving within minutes.
Steep slopes and a strong south-easterly wind helped the fire spread quickly in a northern direction. Dense fynbos, pine and eucalyptus vegetation added fuel to the flames, causing the fire to climb into the tree canopies and move at speed.
No injuries or death
An estimated 14 structures were destroyed, though no injuries or loss of life have been reported.
The fire was swiftly contained through a co-ordinated response involving the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), MTO Kruisfontein, Plettenberg Bay Fire & Rescue, the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association, PG Bison and SANParks.
Close to 100 personnel were involved, and aerial support was deployed early through co-ordination between MTO and GRDM, helping prevent the fire from spreading deeper into Khayalethu.
Mopping-up operations are still under way to ensure that all hotspots are extinguished. The Disaster Management Section is on site, assisting affected residents with assessments and essential relief.
Emergency teams thanked
