KNYSNA NEWS - On Thursday 25 April at 10:00 in the Brenton Community Hall, geologist and Wits professor emeritus Dr Morris Viljoen, in a talk "Earth-Life Link in the Kruger Park" will discuss the inextricable link between the abiotic and the biotic components of the Kruger National Park – how geology determines the various eco-zones which in turn determine the distribution of the large variety of animal and bird species in the park.
With this knowledge, visitors can plan their trips with specific goals: knowing why certain plants are growing in particular areas and hence the animals that frequent those places will obviate looking for the big five in unlikely biomes!
Planned geo-walks from various camps will provide the potential for the development of additional tourist features and Morris has been involved in the initiative of these walks. He and his twin brother Richard discovered and described a new class of primitive volcanic rock in the Komati river valley. This rock is komatite and has subsequently been found in the ancient shield areas of all the continents.
His current interests include the promotion of geo-tourism and he is finalising a book on the geology of the Kruger National Park.
Doors open 09:00 when refreshments will be served. U3A members pay R5 and visitors R10 towards the hire of the hall. All are welcome to attend. For further information contact Judy Dixon on 072 390 6667.
