PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The fourth annual Plett Ocean Festival, which took place recently, showcased 10 exhilarating days of ocean-themed celebrations and scientific discussions.
Engaging marine talks, surf contests, beach clean-ups, and underwater workshops inspired participants of all ages to connect with and protect the ocean.
Highlights included the Plett Marine Science Symposium, featuring renowned speakers like ocean activist Zandile Ndhlovu, marine ecologist Dr Kaylee Smit, and eco-campaigner Liz McDaid. Young shark enthusiast Leon Namntu stole hearts with his message of respect for marine life.
Community engagement soared with the Secrets of the Sea snorkelling workshop and the Ocean Aweh-ness Hub, where 150 local kids explored ocean safety, careers, and conservation - many seeing the sea up close for the first time.
“We saw science, culture, and community come together beautifully,” said Patty Butterworth, Plett Tourism CEO. “The ocean belongs to all of us, and this festival reminded us of that.”
With the support of local partners, non-profit organisations, and sponsors such as Wesgro, Checkers and Beacon Island Resort, the festival concluded successfully and left a legacy of inspiration.
