PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - They really were noticed… the Daredevils of Plett as they strut themselves through the centre of town, down Main Road.
With hooters blaring, whistles and cheers from bystanders, the 24 Daredevils, "Speed-Ou's", in their purple cozzies got the message across on the back of their Speedos: Precious cargo on board; Boardshorts are for sissies; Cancer Asigcwali Ngawe ("We are not full of you"); Wozza Bozza; 5KN 14-5 yakho; Yolo.
Thousands of men countrywide take part in the annual Hollard Daredevil run/walk to make a bold statement in support of prostate and testicular cancer awareness.
The men run/walk the 5km distance in Speedo swim suits.
The Plett contingent met at the Insurance and Investment Shop, diagonally opposite the Dolphin Circle, in Main Road.
'Doubling up next year'
"We certainly were noticed by the general public. Looking forward to doubling up next year to be over 50 participants," said organiser Chris Sounes.
"Once again thanks for participating for these worthy causes."
Hollard said in a statement it was passionate about making a meaningful impact, helping men to protect themselves from life's "unsures" and enabling a culture that sees men talk more openly about their health, specifically when it comes to male cancers, the risks, the symptoms and the importance of early detection.
'Saved my life'
"You saved my life. I had a PSA test at the Hollard Daredevil Run, and they picked up that I had signs of early prostate cancer. I'd never have known if it hadn't been for the run," says one previous participant.
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is one of the beneficiaries of the annual event.
By supporting the Hollard Daredevil Run, participants help to raise funds to broaden education and access to testing in under-resourced communities, while spreading awareness that early detection of prostate and testicular cancer saves lives.
