KNYSNA NEWS - Esona Millicent Silimela (25) from Diepwalle, the indigenous forest outside town, has made it to the semi-finals of the highly anticipated Mrs Curve' SA 2025.
The Mrs Curve' SA pageant is a prestigious platform designed to celebrate and showcase the beauty, strength and confidence of fuller-figured women.
Silimela was born in Qonce (formerly King William's Town) in the Eastern Cape. Her family relocated to Knysna when she was still young. She attended Sunridge Primary in Hornlee, and matriculated from Knysna High School.
Searching for beauty pageant opportunities
Silimela said she had been searching for pageantry options, but she was not sure when she would want to participate in them. "I saw an advertisement of Mrs Curve' SA, inviting ladies from 25 to 55.
I was hesitant, but decided to take a chance and apply. I paid my application fee, but only afterwards did I see the ad saying 'Mrs' - and I was not married! Turns out it's not only for married ladies, but also separated and single ones.
I was surprised to be invited to the workshop in Durban on 1 and 2 March! I swallowed my fear, started arranging my tickets and money for accommodation, and went."
First time entering the pageant
Entering the pageant was a bonus for her because life challenges had shaped her to be more positive, progressive and prosperous.
She was scared because it was her first time going to Durban, but decided she wouldn't turn back. On the first day, she was the only younger lady in the room. "I was scared that I had walked into the wrong room.
However, the atmosphere and vibrancy of the other ladies made me realise I was at the right place, and that it was my time to shine. One of the judges approached me and said she was intrigued by me; my mental age interested her, and she said the message my clothing was putting out there was exceptional. Streams of nervousness mixed with excitement filled me; the experience wasn't at all bad, and it was educational!"
Social media networking
Silimela describes herself as a social media person, though it was challenging to become one. "It teaches me the difference between being a woman and being a female. It teaches me that a woman's crown goes along with confidence and being focused - but not alone; with other women, too.
Every woman has that special person who gives you support and makes you remember who you are, what you are and what your goal is, and sets you back on track. There will always be little humps, but don't let them define you."
Current activities
Silimela is currently working on her social brand, growing her views as she delivers positive messages to everyone who visits her platforms. She is looking for sponsorships or ambassadorships.
She believes that with her strong personality, she could give hope to those who have lost it and energise those who have lost strength in the process of finding themselves.
