PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Over the past years, the Wildlife and Environment Society of SA in Eden has organised self-drive geology tours led by local geologists to three areas of geological interest. These were the Klein Karoo Circuit, the Kammannassie and the coastal section from Mossel Bay to Wilderness Heights.
These proved to be extremely popular and satisfied the interest of local residents regarding our geological past and formations.
The next Wessa Coastal Geology Tour will focus on an exceptionally beautiful stretch of our coastline – from Robberg at Plettenberg Bay to Gericke’s Point at Sedgefield.
Participants will meet at 08:00 on Saturday 24 August in Plettenberg Bay where registration will take place and an introductory geological overview will be given. Participants will be divided into three groups, under the expert guidance of Paul Rixon, Peter Ginn and Colin Ralston.
The self-drive guided tour will visit five different "geosites": Robberg, Kranshoek, Knysna East Heads, Brenton Road and Gericke’s Point. Your picnic lunch will be enjoyed at the beautiful Kranshoek picnic site in the Harkerville area.
The tour costs R100 per person, with proceeds going to the Wessa Education Fund. If you don't have a Sanparks Wild Card, additional costs comprise R50 and R34 entrance fees at Robberg and Kranshoek respectively. Breakfast will be at The Lookout Deck in Plett. For lunch, bring own picnic basket, refreshments and seating.
Bookings are essential, so please send an email before 19 August to Ingrid Vis: ingridvis12@gmail.com. Provide names and contact details of interested persons, type of vehicle, whether transport is required or can be shared, and from where you will be travelling. (This is to share rides, reduce costs and reduce our carbon footprint.) To facilitate entry into Sanparks and CapeNature, also provide your Wild Card number if you have one.
