KNYSNA NEWS - Two learners from Concordia Primary School, Irah Moos and Hope Trotter, brought national recognition to their school, town, and the Eden Central Karoo District when they were named winners of the prestigious 2025 National Science Week Art Competition.
The competition was hosted by the UWC Science Learning Centre, which invited learners nationwide to explore the theme "The Unique Role of Water" through visual art.
Grade 2 learner Irah Moos secured first place in the Foundation Phase category with her captivating artwork titled Rooted in nature, growing together.
Her piece portrayed the Earth cradled within the branches of a sturdy tree, a powerful symbol of how nature nurtures and safeguards our planet.
Through vivid imagery of water and lush landscapes, Moos highlighted the vital role of natural resources in sustaining life.
In the Intermediate & Senior Phase category, Grade 5 learner Hope Trotter also took top honours with her striking piece Hands off our ocean.
Her artwork delivered a compelling message about the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems from human impact, using bold visuals to draw attention to environmental responsibility and ocean conservation.
Although they were unable to attend the Cape Town ceremony in person, the live-streamed event allowed the Concordia community to share in their special moment.
Both learners are part of the school's extra-curricular art programme, guided by dedicated educators Rienette Joubert and Zanette Terblanche.
Their mentorship was instrumental in shaping the girls' creative journeys.
