KNYSNA NEWS - In celebration of Heritage Day the Knysna Khoi-khoi embarked on a heritage awareness campaign among children and adults.
As part of the campaign they visited Sunridge Primary School on Friday 23 September to teach them about Khoi culture and heritage.
"It was a first of a kind that the children as well as teachers could get a taste of their own language in the form of a few words of Khoi-khoi, which is regarded as one of the oldest languages and was almost wiped out, but is now being revived by the Khoi-khoi," said Kai Terblanche of the Knysna Khoi-khoi clan.
The visit included a demonstration of how the Khoisan used to use an ostrich egg as a utensil and to carry water.
"Knysna has a rich history of the Knysna Khoi-khoi clan dwelling here for much longer than any other human - that's why the name 'Knysna Khoi-khoi' means 'men of men'," Terblanche said.
"The day was an amazing step in the right cultural direction in making known that the Knysna Khoi-khoi was and will be here for many ages to come."
