PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay will get a taste of the Rio de Janeiro festival atmosphere on Saturday 1 June when a Street Carnival parade will samba its way through the streets to raise funds for the Green Hearts organisation.
The parade will include dancing girls, a marching field band, a drill squad and even a karate display.
"It is not only to create awareness of the incredible work a handful of volunteers are doing, but to inspire others to join the Green Hearts, a community united against child abuse and gender-based violence, " said Ina Olivier, the project facilitator of the carnival.
The Street Carnival parade falls within the National Child Protection Week.
"Let us celebrate our children. Your support and attendance will be so much appreciated," said Olivier.
"Hopefully, enough funds will be raised to turn both Saps victim friendly rooms into welcoming havens for victims dealing with trauma and also fund care packages for the victims."
The Street Carnival parade starts 10:00 at the Plettenberg Bay police station, moving across Marine Way, into Main Street where the donation-tin brigade will flood the sidewalks collecting funds for the Green Hearts.
A Bitou traffic vehicle will lead the parade, followed by a Black Subaru of the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA), K9 and handler, K9 vehicle, carnival participants and floats.
There will be karate displays under the leadership of Sgt Jonathan Jansen in Main Street. The New Horizon Dancing girls will show off their skills to the toe-tapping, hip-moving music of the Marching Field Band. Also, part of the festivities with no introduction needed: Sgt Bryon de Vos and the Crags drill squad!
"Be ready to be entertained by Plett's Drum Majorettes, followed by the Green Hearts float and marchers, A21 float and marchers, Native Roots float, Children's Week Float, Medlife, White Eighty-six and Saps Vehicle.
"The parade will move down Beacon Way to the Informal Trading Station where a feast of mouth-watering treats will be on sale.
"Green Hearts are doing amazing work, their dedication and victim support is unknown in the greater Bitou," said Olivier.
