KNYSNA NEWS – Organisers of the Knysna Esports Cup are calling on local players of the online video game Fortnite Battle Royale to enter their teams of three for the inaugural event that starts next week.
The Knysna Esports Cup is an online competition that will be live-streamed during the 2021 Knysna Oyster Festival.
The cup features the Battle Royale version of the online video game and worldwide phenomenon Fortnite. The trios tournament will be played over six qualifying rounds on 5 to 10 July, with the top players advancing to the semi-finals on 14 to 15 July, then the finals on 16 July.
Each round consists of five games where teams will compete against each other to be the last team standing.
The cup will be a team-based and cross-platform tournament, allowing players to compete from a range of different devices, including mobile, PC or console. Elite Pro Series, one of South Africa's leading esports tournament organisers, will host the event with caster and streamer AiroOG leading the commentary.
The event is proud to announce that this year South Africa's favourite and youngest professional Fortnite player, RoMike and his team, will be participating in the tournament.
As it stands, the Knysna Esports Cup boasts the largest prize pool yet for this season's competitions in South Africa with a total of R20 000 up for grabs. "Our vision is to create an annual event that becomes the largest online hosted cup of its kind on the African continent, all taking place in the beautiful coastal town of Knysna," the organisers said in a statement.
The event is open to South African residents - attracting gamers between the ages of 9 and 30.
To enter the competition as a local team, participants need to find two partners and register by messaging the team name to the organisers on their Facebook page, Knysna Esports Cup, or sending it via e-mail to KnysnaEsportsCup@gmail.com. Five spots have been reserved for teams from Knysna.
The first five local teams to register will be guaranteed a spot in the qualifying rounds. All registration for other teams will take place daily at 14:00 on qualifying days and players must enter on the Elite Pro Series website.
The organisers of the cup have a few primary goals, namely:
- to introduce esports as a "new discipline" to an existing annual family festival that normally caters for traditional sport only;
- to put gamers at the forefront by securing a healthy prize pool;
- to provide a platform where players can meet, interact and collaborate;
- to showcase new technology;
- to promote esports awareness within South Africa;
- to promote Knysna as a gamer's destination of choice.
