KNYSNA NEWS - After proceeds were collected at two successful concerts that drew crowds in their hundreds, the Knysna Singers made a hearty donation to the Knysna Animal Welfare Society last week
The Knysna Singers are a choir made up of a group of 25 people with voices ranging from soprano to bass who practise together once a week for six months in preparation for a theme-based concert in June as well as in November, which is typically Christmas-related.
This year they had almost 300 people attend their two concerts entitled "Musical Gifts". The songs they sang – all in four-part harmony – ranged from classical, medieval and sea-shanties to jazz and modern pop.
The choir raised funds in aid of Kaws to the tune of R7 500 during the concerts on 27 October and 3 November. The group's incoming and outgoing chairs Peter Lay and Peter Southey respectively handed over the donation to Kaws' Megan Heyns and Ashra America on 4 December, with Heyns expressing their' gratitude for the donation, which will go a long way to assisting Kaws in running their various programmes.
The second of these performances was bittersweet for the choir as it was the last for stalwart Moira Shafer, well-known Knysna music teacher, conductor and singer. After running the choir for 20-odd years she has decided it was time to retire.
"She will be sorely missed by all members of the group who will commence rehearsals under the leadership of Rose Graham, the new musical director of the Knysna Singers," said Lay.
