KNYSNA NEWS - With many of the infrastructure wheels in Knysna coming off or wobbling precariously, citizens are literally taking matters into their own hands to keep the show on the road.
One example of this is the completion of the second phase of the renovation of the safety fence along the N2 outside Knysna.
This project, launched in November last year, is undertaken entirely by volunteers from AfriForum's Knysna branch and the organisation Revive Knysna.
The fence, which was torn down in places, has now been painstakingly repaired and repainted.
In this phase of the project, a total of 335m of the fence was repaired at a cost of approximately R9 000.
This brings the total length of repairs to this fence to 570m - more than half a kilometre. In addition to repairing the fence, these volunteers also clean the sidewalk, pick up trash and clean storm water drains.
AfriForum and Revive Knysna are taking on infrastructure projects themselves
Motto: Just do it
According to Schalk van der Merwe, chairperson of AfriForum's Knysna branch, the organisation does not believe in waiting for anything to be fixed, but proactively takes on projects.
"At AfriForum we believe in doing it yourself, rather than doing nothing. We would like to thank the members of Revive Knysna, without whom we would not have been able to make this project a success."
He urges the community to join the Knysna branch and make a difference in the town.
To join contact Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum's district coordinator for the Southern Cape at marthinus.erasmus@afriforum.co.za or 081 216 9602.
Citizens are taking hands to do maintenance in Knysna. The N2 fence is a prime example.
