KNYSNA NEWS – Four charity shops in central Knysna and a local coffee shop have thrown in their weight together to create the special Charity & Cappuccino initiative.
The aim of the initiative is to improve support of local charity shops that sell second-hand goods to raise funds for their charity organisations.
The charity shops that are part of the initiative belong to the Knysna Animal Welfare Society (Kaws), Red Cross Knysna, Epilepsy SA Southern Cape/Karoo and Knysna/Sedgefield Hospice.
These four are within a few hundred meters of one another, which is what led them to band together.
"A lot of people are shop-specific supporters, for example they might just visit the Kaws shop or just the Hospice shop and so on. We want to change this," explained Epilepsy SA Southern Cape/Karoo marketer and PRO, Ashleigh Smith.
Sylvi Tilikainen of the Knysna/Sedgefield Hospice elaborated further. "The idea behind Charity & Cappuccino was that we wanted to encourage people to visit more shops and support more local charities so that we can all benefit."
The four shops joined hands with Art Café on Queen for the initiative. "All people have to do is spend R30 or more at all four of the charity shops and then they can visit Art Café on Queen to redeem a free cappuccino," said Kaws' Retha Havenga. Owner of the coffee shop Helena Gerber was delighted to get on board.
"These are all fantastic organisations and charity shops with great products on sale, all of whose profits go to helping their respective organisations," she said. "I am over the moon to just be able to lend a hand in encouraging people to support them."
Local artist and illustrator Piet Frans also lent his hand to the initiative by designing a special Charity & Cappuccino map laying out the various shops' locations. There are copies of the map at all four charity shops and at Art Café on Queen, and it is these maps that will be stamped to be used as a "coupon" for the free cappuccino.
