PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Police have identified the second victim of the recent Plettenberg Bay plane crash.
The wreckage of the light aircraft was found at the Airport Business Park after the incident happened just before 18:00 on Monday 2 December.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed this week that the passenger in the plane was Johannes Izak Frederick Dormehl (57). The pilot was local Stewart Lithgow.
The Western Cape health department's emergency medical services responded to reports of the crash and personnel attempted to save the two men. They were assisted by several other organisations including members of the local National Sea Rescue Institute. "The two patients were trapped in the aircraft. Sadly one was fatally injured on the scene and the other passed away in hospital. Our sincere condolences to the family of the two deceased as circumstances around the crash are being investigated by the police," said the department's spokesperson Deanna Bessick.
Spies said a culpable homicide case was opened as standard procedure before the matter was handed over to the SA Civil Aviation Authority.
It is still unclear what the cause of the accident was and the regulator has not responded to queries before going to print.
