GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO | HESSEQUA NEWS - South Africa's Local Government Elections will be held on 1 November 2021 to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces.
This coming weekend, 18 - 19 September, is earmarked for voter registration. On these dates, all voting stations will be open between 08:00 and 17:00.
You can find your voting station by using the IEC website’s Voting Station Finder.
Voters are reminded that they are only allowed to vote at the voting station where they are registered.
Therefore, if you have moved since the last municipal election, it is important to register where you live currently.
If this is your first time registering to vote, please note that you must be a South African citizen, and you must be at least 18 years old to vote.
To register to vote, you will need to provide a valid identity document in the form of either a green, barcoded ID book, Smart ID card, or Temporary Identification Certificate.
You can also register online at www.elections.org.za.
Not sure if you’re registered to vote? You can check by sending an SMS with your ID number to 32810 (R1 per SMS).
Special votes
You may be eligible for a special vote if you are unable to go to a voting station on 1 November. Those who are physically unable to visit a voting station on election day because of pregnancy, infirmity, disability, or other circumstances, can apply for a special vote by:
- Registering for a special vote online at www.elections.org.za
- SMSing 32249 with your ID number.
- Filling in an MEC35 form and having it hand-delivered to an IEC office.
