Local cancer survivor, Vera Moir, together with dedicated supporters, recently held a fundraiser, the proceeds of which will go towards the awareness campaign, Cancer Viv.
The fundraiser event, comprising of a book sale, was held on Saturday, July 30.
"We have decided to spread out to higher horizons, expanding our wings. We no longer just concentrate on breast cancer, but also prostrate cancer. We are doing this so that many others do not have to experience what we went through," explained Moir.
She further said that the Cancer Viv (previously known as the Journey of Hope) in conjunction with the campaign, People Living with Cancer, will host a book sale fundraiser at Jean’s Coffee Shop every last Saturday of each month, thus providing other cancer sufferers the opportunity to be able to afford therapeutic treatments.
"Supporters do not necessarily have to buy a book at the book sale fundraiser. Persons can just come and take a book and donate any sum of money. All proceeds go directly towards the awareness campaign," ensured Moir.
She explained, "We have to raise a certain amount every year. Therefore we decided to host various fundraising events throughout the year, and not only during the course of the Journey of Hope Breast Cancer Awareness Ride."
The aim of this campaign is to reach thousands of citizens nationwide, educating not only cancer sufferers, but every citizen in South Africa on self examinations, and spreading the message that cancer is not a death sentence and that early detection is the best defence.
The female cancer survivors who related their success stories in the various towns they travelled through on their Harleys last year, will once again embark on the Journey of Hope Cancer Awareness Ride in September this year.
A dinner and dance fundraiser in aid of garnering funds towards the Cancer Viv campaign, will be held on August 20 at Knysna High School’s hall.
Live music will be provided by Neels Moir.
Tickets (at R100 per person) are obtainable at Knysna High School, or contact Vera Moir at 084 555 1455.
"I want to thank my son, Neels, for always supporting me in this event, as well as Jean [Marx] for the opportunity to use her coffee shop every month," concluded Moir.
Vera Moir together with Jean Marx will host a book sale in aid of cancer awareness. The first fundraiser was held on Saturday, July 30.
