KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna’s Heatherhill College in Knysna, along with volunteer organisation Edge of Africa, are challenging high schools in town to spread the Christmas cheer among the needy this year.
The high school’s Interact Club has set up a Christmas food distribution initiative and has invited schools to compete in a friendly interschool drive to reach this goal. “It means combining our forces for the greater good. Together we can feed Knysna over December,” says acting principal Lola le Grange.
The competition will take place from 1 September to 1 November. “Each school or club participating must collect as much nonperishable food as they can. This can be anything from tinned foods to maize meal, flour and sugar.”
Prize money to be won
On 3 November all participating schools will be invited to Heatherhill School in Queen Street for an official counting and delivery of the food. “The school that collects the most food will win sponsored prize money to go towards other Interact projects.”
The school is no newcomer to community projects. Last year, learners were honoured by the local Rotary Club for being the best Interact Club in Knysna. One of the biggest motivations behind receiving this honour was the massive growth the club had experienced over last year as well as the numerous projects the members took on. These included lending a hand with relief work after the Knysna and Plettenberg Bay fires in June last year.
Other projects included working at the local recycling swop shop, helping out at the Knysna Animal Welfare Society (Kaws) and inspiring residents and visitors to donate blood. The club also did a blanket and food drive for Kaws.

Le Grange says the motivation behind the food drive is to make the festive season special for those less fortunate. “This drive is about bringing a happier and healthier holiday season to the less fortunate within our community.”
