More than 700 people died on Thursday and more than 800 others were injured in the worst hajj tragedy in 25 years.
The world’s largest annual gathering of people has been the scene of numerous stampedes, riots and fires in the past but their frequency has been greatly reduced with billions of dollars spent on upgrading infrastructure and crowd control technology.
The latest tragedy however has now put those measures under the microscope.
The stampede occurred during the ritual known as “stoning the devil” in a tent city in Mina yesterday.
