KNYSNA NEWS - Yet another drug bust was carried out in Knysna this past weekend, bringing the total number of drug-related busts to 11 since the start of June.
On Friday 27 August, Knysna police confiscated 97 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R5 000 in Concordia.
"The members conducted patrols when they noticed strange behaviour from a juvenile," said Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies. "They approached the 17-year-old juvenile and upon searching him found the drugs in his pocket."
The juvenile was arrested on a charge of possession of drugs. He was later released into the custody of his parents and warned to appear in court on a later date.
This was the latest in what is becoming a lengthy list of drug busts in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in the past three months.
Between the 11 busts, at least 14 suspects have been arrested and charged with various offences including possession, dealing in and cultivation of drugs.
The most commonly confiscated drug has been tik, which featured in five of the 11 busts, with Mandrax featuring in four and marijuana in three. The largest bust occurred on 15 June in Kwanokuthula, Plett, where a 48-year-old resident was arrested after 1 786 tablets of Mandrax, with an estimated street value of R90 000, were found in his home.
Another large bust occurred on 17 June when police confiscated 446 grams of magic mushrooms at a house in Gordon Street, Knysna.
The drugs hold an estimated worth of R46 000 and a 36-year-old suspect was arrested for the cultivation of drugs.
