KNYSNA NEWS - Every year, the Knysna wooden toys and accessories manufacturer Stumped invites local schools to take part in a woodworking tour when about 200 children are hosted.
This year, the week in which they welcomed children for the tour was from 2 to 6 September, and it started off by giving the children an educational talk out on the lawn at Stumped's premises in the Industrial Area where they learn about trees, how they age and grow, where wood comes from etc. The children are then taken on a guided tour where various stations are set up throughout the factory to show the children all the different processes involved in woodworking.
"We try make this as hands-on as possible and the children absolutely love it," said Aimee McAllister of Stumped.
At the end of the tour, the classes are settled around a big table and the children even get to build their own woodworking kit.
For this year's tour, Stumped launched a bird feeder, which includes all wooden parts, nails and hammer, among others. Without fail, the children leave with a great feeling of accomplishment having made something themselves.
